PEPCO Electric Bills Compared 2018 2024 2025

In fairness and accuracy, here’s a comparison posted by someone elsewhere —

PEPCO Electric Bills Compared 2018 2024 2025 - Pepco 2018 to 2025

Posts on Nextdoor with headlines like “my Pepco bill tripled”, “Receiving Very High Electric Bills Lately”, and “My power bill is twice what it normally is” without providing the underlining relevant billing data are not helpful. I really wonder why such posters don’t provide the following information for the Pepco bill they are complaining about:

• Monthly Kilowatt Hours Used;
• # of days billed;
• Avg monthly temperature;
• And, in the case of the 3 largest billing categories (“Energy Charge” for Distribution, Transmission, and Generation) what was the rate per kilowatt hour (kWh)?
• Oh, and for those of you upset about your “EmPower Md” charge, what was its rate/kWh for you?

I thought it might be helpful if I provided a snapshot of our Pepco bills for July 2018, 2024, and 2025. First, we live in a 1,778 sq.ft. split level with central air/gas heat. We use a programmable thermostat and the program scheme has remained unchanged for the past 10+ years. All appliances and HVAC have remained the same as well. No large, battery-powered devices/vehicles have been used during that time. No changes have been made to windows, insulation, aux cooling devices (e.g. fans) during that period. My wife and I have been the home’s sole occupants for the past 30+ years. Pepco is both our electricity supply and delivery provider. We do not use its “Budget Billing” program…we pay each month’s bill in full. Here’s our data:

We certainly have NOT seen anywhere close to a “doubling” or “tripling” of our total annual Pepco expense in the years 2018 thru 2024. Here’s the data:

YearTotal#changeAvgMoBill
2018$1465.72-8.78$122.14
2019$1455.18-0.72$121.27
2020$1543.796.09$128.65
2021$1439.71-6.74$119.98
2022$1594.3510.74$132.86
2023$1558.18-2.27$129.85
2024$1703.999.36$142.00

Finally, for 2025 through July, our Pepco expense is 8.91% more than for the same period in 2024.

While we wish our Pepco bill would remain unchanged over the years (and we recognize that our electricity use, according to Pepco, falls within the upper range of similar homes), our records reveal that for the years 2018 vs 2024, our July Pepco expense increased by a total of 16.25%…certainly NOT the 200 or 300% folks are claiming…
